Medical Career Institute: COVID-19 School Safety Plan

INTRODUCTION

Governor Murphy has issued Executive Order155 (EO 155), which allows private career schools to resume in-person instruction, including laboratory or clinical components, on or after July 1, 2020. Medical Career Institute has developed a plan including the requirements set forth in EO155. The plan also follows the guidelines from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) as well as other state agencies. All students and employees are required to follow these protocols.  

PARTIAL RE-OPENING (UPDATED 7/8/20) 

LAB CLASSES 

  • Please wait to receive an email from your Program Instructor with your return date to lab classes & new schedule. 
  • Lab classes missed due to the COVID-19 school closure must be completed. No one will graduate without taking it. 
  • In order to resume lab classes, students must submit (1) a negative COVID-19 test result.  (Revised from (2) tests to (1) effective 7/8/20). 
  • If you have started clinical externship, you will need to take days off to complete lab classes. 

CLINICAL EXTERNSHIP

MCI is working with hospitals to resume clinical training.

Schedules may change due to the social distancing requirements. 

Start/return dates may change to ensure students prior to COVID-19 complete their hours. 

Many hospitals are requiring (2) negative COVID-19 tests to be completed within 3 weeks

 You will be notified if you are placed at a hospital with these requirements.  

 

COVID19 TESTING

  • All students/instructors/staff are required to submit (1) negative COVID-19 tests prior to returning to school. 
  • Documentation of negative test will be required to return to school.

OUT OF COUNTRY ATTESTATION FORM

  • Students will be required to sign an attestation sheet to attest that they have not been out of the country or knowingly been exposed to anyone who has tested positive to COVID-19.

FACE COVERINGS

  • Students and faculty must wear face covering at all times while in school.
  • Students may wear a multi-layered cloth face covering or make their own.

TEMPERATURE CHECK

  • Temperature will be taken daily upon entering the building and as needed.
  • Temperature will be recorded daily for every student on a log sheet
  • If temp is above 99.5 the student will be sent home.

COVID19 SAFETY TRAINING

  • All students and instructors will be emailed training materials regarding COVID-19 sanitation and social distances practices

SANITATION & CLEANING

  • Housecleaning will be increased to ensure bathrooms and common spaces are cleaned several times a day.
  • MCI will maintain an ample supply of inventory.
  • Automatic hand sanitizers will be in every classroom/lab.
  • Instructors will wipe down work area and laboratory areas several times a day with disinfectant supplies by the school.
  • Students will wipe down work area before leaving that area unattended with a disinfectant supplied by the school.
  • Students will wipe down their work area at the conclusion of class.
  • School employees will wipe down work area before leaving with a disinfectant.

 

CLASSROOM / LABORATORY MANAGEMENT

  • MCI will be supplying Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) for lab training.
  • Students participating in lab classes will be required to wear PPE to ensure both instructor and student safety.
  • Instructors will be wiping down equipment regularly.
  • Classrooms will be arranged to permit social distancing.
  • Laboratory schedules may be staggered and/or rotated hourly until social distancing requirements are lifted.
  • Laboratory classes that are larger may be divided into smaller classes.

 

FACILITY MANAGEMENT

  • Signage regarding COVID-19 will be placed in all classroom, work areas, etc.
  • Students will employ social distancing (6 feet) as much as possible.
  • This includes all classrooms, hallways, restrooms and common areas.
  • MCI will be acquiring automatic paper towel dispensers, automatic soap dispensers, and will place automatic hand sanitizer stations throughout the building.
  • Students will not be permitted to congregate in large numbers in the student lounge, hallways, and other common places where students would normally congregate.
  • Student lunchroom/lounge will be closed.
  • One individual permitted in the elevator at a time.
  • One individual permitted in the restroom at a time.
  • School will maintain an ample supply of inventory.
  • Staff & administrative employees may be scheduled to work remotely and/or on alternating days.
  • Students are encouraged to make appointments and/or communicate through e-mail with staff & administrative employees.

  

ADMISSIONS / FINANCIAL AID MANAGEMENT

  •  Prospective students are encouraged to visit the school website and submit their information through the ‘Contact Us’ form.
  • Pre-admission packets will be delivered electronically.
  • Application paperwork will be delivered electronically and may be submitted by mail or secure link provided by MCI.
  • If students require financial aid assistance, they will set up an appointment for a phone or Zoom video conference.
  • Class start dates may be postponed & notice will be provided to all prospective students.
  • No visitors will be permitted at this time.

 

  REPORTING

 Medical Career Institute will maintain documentation of the daily temperature log, COVID19 testing results and other attestations

   CONCLUSION

 All students and employees will be required to comply with the protocols in this plan. MCI will continue to work with local and state officials once the plan is implemented.  Revisions to the plan may be necessary as we continue to monitor health department guidelines.  Should this be the case, all students and instructors will be made aware with as much notice as possible. Students are also reminded to visit the COVID19 page regularly.

 

CURRENT STUDENTS

 

  • On-Line Classes: All classes are currently being taught online through Google Classroom, Zoom, and other educational platforms. Online instruction will continue until state and federal authorities deem it is safe to resume face-to-face instruction. 

 

  • Lab Classes: Lab class arrangements will be determined prior to the school reopening. Every student will be required to complete lab requirements prior to graduation.

 

  • Integrated Clinical & Clinical Externship Start Dates: Many students are inquiring about when they may be able to start or resume their clinicals. There are no definite dates at this time because every hospital, facility and doctors office has their own protocols set in place for COVID19. Additionally, students who were suspended from attending when COVID19 took place will need to complete their hours first following the next cohort of students.  All students need to anticipate externship start delays.  

 

Integrated Clinical: If you are permitted to resume your patient care hours while the school is closed, you must request and complete a Clinical Externship Participation Liability Waiver – COVID19 before you participate. If you are not sure or need  assistance contacting your site OR need the form, please send an e-mail to covid19@mcinj.edu.

  • Leave of Absence: Students who were not attending classes or clinical externships due to COVID19, were placed on a LOA. This is a requirement set forth by the schools Financial Aid Software Management company since no attendance is being entered. Students will be required to sign a LOA form once the school reopens. If students do not wish to be on a LOA, students will need to withdraw and re-enroll at a later date. 

 

  • Graduation Dates: Graduation dates will be modified for every student enrolled during COIVD19.  New enrollment agreements will be generated to reflect the accurate completion date.
